Estancia San Jose is located on one of the finest stretches of the famed Rio Grande. This sprawling ranch has access to some of the finest pools for the pursuit of the largest Sea Run Brown Trout on the planet. Owned by Ted Turner, this estancia has become one of Mr. Turner and his family’s favorite fly-fishing destinations. The lodge was designed to offer maximum comfort to host our guests during the fishing season.
The ranch relies on wind energy to provide power for every house on the property. The technology was installed in 1999 and still works as the primary power source. There are 5 double rooms with private bathrooms that can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests. However, the lodge takes a maximum of only 4 rods per week. Thus the lodge limits its capacity to 4 anglers and 4 non anglers making a total of 8 guests ensuring a personal atmosphere at the lodge.
Skating streamers, nymphs and dry flies into these San Jose pools on the fabled Rio Grande are all possible ways to entice a violent fight with a monster Brown. Every year around mid-November thousands of these giant Sea Run Brown Trout start to return from the sea to their pools and by the end of January most of the population is on the river.
Sea Run Brown Trout are very aggressive and the fight to catch them is physically tough, a challenge to even the most experienced angler! The Rio Grande has a gravel bottom making it very easy to wade and safe for any age. We suggest the use of Spey rods (7 to 9 weight and from 12 to 15 feet long). On windy days Spey rods are more comfortable and less tiring to use. If you are new with these rods, our guides are expert instructors and will help you to quickly learn the most efficient techniques. Single hand rods (7 to 9 weight up to 10 feet long) with milder wind or with short casts can also be effective.
The lodge is located 1 hour driving from the Rio Grande Airport in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina where daily flights from Buenos Aires are available.
